Have you heard of the Expert Fallacy? It is actually something people and companies prey upon in order to market- PRIMING YOU to buy their product.
It is actually quite scary. Many of us are trustworthy human beings- so when someone looks the part, acts the part, and even talks the part- we believe it all to be true.
Think: You are walking down the street and a man in a police officer uniform is approaching you. We believe- because of the his uniform, the way he is carrying himself, the words he is using- that he is a police officer. However, in reality he isn't, he is trying to get information on where you live- a con. But we trust- we give just a BIT too much information.
Now, how does this all play into marketing? Let's start with PRIMING. Priming your audience is using particular words to make you believe something before you even know much about the product. "Good evening ladies and gentlemen! Are you ready to learn about and try our nutritious snacks? They will provide you with several essential vitamins and help you lose that stubborn fat! Plus, they are SUPER convenient!"
You are now primed. You now believe that the product being sold to you is nutritious. Your brain is now wired to hear, see and believe in the product without much criticism or research. In reality, my product has nutritional aspects to it, but has a ton of artificial sugar (legally sugar free!), high sodium, and abides by FDAs organic guidelines- so I got to slap an ORGANIC sticker on it!:)
Let's quickly move back to the Expert Fallacy.

Now- I want to point out a critical piece of information from the video "GOING ALONG WITH THE TRIBE UPS YOUR CHANCES OF SURVIVAL." It is evolution. We are wired to function in that way. This is not necessarily a good thing- sometimes we have to be that person that steps up and asks relevant questions to get the nitty gritty hardcore FACTS.
What is scary to me about this is simply the fact of the amount of "experts" out in the nutrition world right now- creating a FOOD FALLACY surrounding nutrition fads. There is an incredible variety of diet fads to choose from- from Atkins to the Four-Hour Body. In addition, the companies all claim they are backed by science. However, if we look at nutritional science- there is no one "right way" that can be packaged and sold to the masses. Just because we use a product, we love the product, we can sell and buy the product does not mean we are instantly experts equipped with the knowledge and understanding to guide others on endeavors involving nutrition- guidelines- health benefits- and use in SAFE weightloss. In reality, we just become marketers for the company- helping increase the MILLION DOLLAR A DAY industry.
Sometimes it scares me. When I research different companies- some don't bother me at all. The basics of their "teachings" and nutritional information is good/harmless. It is at least a program that is aiding in developing a healthy diet- sometime we need something simple to follow and tell us what to do- EXACTLY developed from qualified individuals. Although programs such as these have a low success rate, their information and products are decent.
Others- they OUTRIGHT scare me. They are HORRIBLE. From incredibly low caloric intake of prepackaged food to lack to REAL RAW food, to same caloric intake for EVERYONE, to not eating at all. First, we need to eat to lose weight and keep our body functioning healthy. We need to eat RAW real food- NEARLY ALL the time. Not everyone should be eating the same calories- different body sizes/types and activity level determine your caloric intake. Not eating at all-aka intermittent fasting- actually can have great benefits when done with research, knowledge/guidance from a nutrition coach, and intention.
A very close friend of mine recently used Medifast. She was able to drop a significant amount of weight VERY quickly. However, in my conversation with her she admitted that her body fat percentage was still within the OBESE range- and she looks FAR from obese. She looks healthy from the outside. So- in a nut shell, the weight she lost was water weight and LEAN body mass rather than FAT! She is now working one on one with a nutrition coach and personal trainer to get her body fat percentage to a healthy percentage. THIS IS SCARY! Although the right way takes a bit longer- it gets you the last results you WANT and NEED.
