Can real food help you heal and solve problems that we find ourselves masking with medications? Well, as many people claim, eating real food can help eliminate, manage and heal our bodies from the inside out. Of course, healing ourselves takes longer than taking medication to mask and control symptoms- but could you imagine being able to decrease dosage or even eliminate prescription medications?
How can you help your body heal from the inside-out? Let's discuss what "real food" is and how that relates to "processed foods".
Real foods = foods that can be found in nature and are minimally processed. (No bleaching or other chemical processing, no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, not genetically modified)
Processed foods = what we find in boxes, bags, cartons or cans in the inner aisles of most grocery stores and in fast food restaurants. Contains artificial sweeteners, flavors or colors and highly refined oils.
We know that controlling our food intake and purchasing low-fat, low calorie, low sodium, and low carb can help us with initial weight-loss and correct health problems related to the United States epidemic of obesity. We know how being conscious when purchasing these foods can prevent heart disease (see this post). However, many of us are ready for the next step.
While consuming those health-conscious foods, they are filled with unnatural ingredients. We have heard claims of ingredients causing cancer, ADHD, skin irritations, headaches, inflammation and more! However, we often shrug-off these claims. We know that FDA would not allow these preservatives, sweeteners, and artificial colors be placed in our food... right?
Truth is... they do. However, they only allow amounts of these agents into our foods that are considered to be GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe). So, what we can conclude is that bag of chips, processed crackers, and cupcakes may only have small amounts that are considered GRAS. However, overtime, the consumption of these ingredients can add up in our body- overtime potentially causing issues.
Many of the ingredients we find in our processed foods are banned in other countries due to the belief they are unsafe for consumption. Why are they legal here? Well, there is "no solid evidence" that eating small amounts cause related health issues. It is important to consider this thought: Why are American considered to be one of the most unhealthy people in other developed nations? A thought to mull over.
So, how do we "heal?" Well, let's work towards consuming real food. Minimally processed and found in nature with wholesome ingredients packed full of vitamins and nutrients.
